Installing SQL 2008 express edition is a nightmare, I haven’t seen experience such a crap installer from Microsoft.
Here is the tweak to install if installation issues exist.
Remove the registry key at: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90
Install the SP1 of Visual Studio 2008 from - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=FBEE1648-7106-44A7-9649-6D9F6D58056E&displaylang=en
